Preview: Moore to start at corner in first collegiate game

Saying that it was an eventful Tuesday for freshman defensive back Khalil Moore would be a colossal understatement. Not only did Moore take his first college class, he found out he would be starting in his first collegiate game tomorrow for the Elon University football team as the Phoenix takes on Gardner-Webb University at 3:30 p.m. “I didn’t really know until after class today,” Moore said.

College careers start early for football freshmen

Move-in weekend is a blur of packing too many boxes in cars that seem too small and hoping it all makes it into a dorm room in one piece. Between move-in traffic and hordes of families in residence halls, freshman find themselves falling abruptly into this new part of their lives, rather than entering it gracefully. Instead of getting lost in the impending chaos that is move-in weekend, freshman football players enjoyed moving into their summer residences with their fellow teammates on June 12 for the football “bridge” program. The early move offers many advantages to the new additions, easing their college transition and acclimation to campus life.

DB picks right time to shine

After the Elon University football team’s spring game ended, rising sophomore quarterback Connor Christiansen smiled a knowing smile when asked about rising sophomore defensive back Greg Liggs Jr. “Greg Liggs has not made one play all spring until tonight,” Christiansen said through laughter. Standing just five feet away, Liggs’ eyes lit up at Christiansen’s words, and asked, “Is that on the record?” The laughter shared between these two after the exchange happened following Liggs’ phenomenal spring game, where he picked off rising sophomore quarterback Daniel Thompson three times. And it comes at the end of an admittedly difficult spring for the Greensboro native and Southeast Guilford High School graduate.

Football starts spring practices

Most college students would love more down time. But for rising sophomore quarterback Connor Christiansen, all the down time meant he couldn’t be on the field for the Elon University football team. And now, after four months of workouts, he gets to do just that. “I don’t know how many weeks of winter workouts we had, but it felt like it would never end,” Christiansen said.

Football attempts to move on to ‘new normalcy’

The Elon University football team returned to campus late Saturday night after defeating the University of Maine 27-22 earlier in the day. The conclusion to a week of unimaginable tragedy — the death of junior wide receiver Demitri Allison — had ended in triumph. But for head coach Rich Skrosky, recalling the week that was has left some words lingering in his mind. “One of the coaches — and so many coaches reached out — not to say anyone specific, but a name most people would know, his words were, ‘This week will be harder than last,’” Skrosky said, then paused, letting the words hang in the air. The team’s chaplain, Pastor Bob Disher of St.
